There has been a whirlwind of activity on this tiny homestead lately! Inside and out. Over the weekend, we were in the middle of constructing a rabbit yard for our bunnies when our smallest Sprout started squealing. While playing beneath the cottonwood trees, she had spotted an object falling from the heights and land on the ground. It was a bat! He was a beautiful brown bat. Unfortunately, he had quite a fall and didn’t make it past the evening. But we were surprised that he’d been in our tree and suspect there are more. We are fairly close to the river, but I honestly didn’t think that bats would be roosting this far inland. Perhaps they like our pond? Nevertheless, we’re adding a bat house to our wish list for the homestead.
This impromptu discovery kindled a renewed interest in some of our most beloved picture books by Brian Lies… Bats at the Beach, Bats at the Library, and Bats at the Ballgame. Perhaps we could write our own? Bats at the Pond? Bats on the Homestead? Hmmm.
